A family windowsill that grew into a learning community

Monstera Guru Academy began with a grandmother sharing propagation tips with her grandchildren around a windowsill layered with houseplants. That same warmth — unhurried, rooted in genuine curiosity — is what shapes every course we make today.

Our story

How Monstera Guru grew, season by season

Monstera Guru Academy began as a small family project rooted in a genuine love of houseplants. What started as a grandmother sharing propagation tips with her grandchildren has grown into a warm, close-knit learning community serving plant lovers from Victoria to St. John's. We believe that knowing your plants — really knowing them — changes how you live with them. Our video lessons are practical, unhurried, and filmed in real home environments, not sterile studios. Three generations of our family have shaped the curriculum, and many of our students have been with us since the very beginning. Whether you are nursing your first pothos or managing a 200-plant collection through a Canadian winter, Monstera Guru Academy is the place where curiosity becomes confidence.

  1. 2011

Monstera Guru Academy is founded by a Toronto family with a shared passion for houseplants. The first course — a simple video series on tropical plant basics — is shared with friends and neighbours.

  2. 2015

The platform grows to serve students in every Canadian province. The Winter Plant Survival Program is launched in response to requests from students in colder regions.

  3. 2018

Monthly Live Q&A sessions are introduced, creating a real-time connection between instructors and the growing student community. The session library begins to accumulate.

  4. 2021

A second generation of the founding family joins the teaching team, bringing fresh perspectives on aroid care and propagation. The Monstera & Aroid Deep Dive course launches.

  5. 2024

The Kids & Family Plant Care Course is released, welcoming a third generation of learners and completing the full family learning journey that Monstera Guru has always envisioned.

Values

What we believe about learning and plants

01

Built for Canadian conditions

Our curriculum is shaped by the realities of Canadian winters, low-light seasons, and heated-home humidity. Advice from tropical climates rarely translates — ours always does.

02

Filmed in real homes

Every lesson is shot in an actual living room, kitchen, or spare bedroom — the same environments our students learn in. What you see on screen is what you can replicate at home.

03

Loyal community across generations

Many of our students have been with us for over a decade, and some have enrolled their own children. That continuity shapes a community that is genuinely supportive and knowledgeable.

04

Learn at your own pace

All self-paced courses offer lifetime access. There are no deadlines, no expiry dates, and no pressure. Return to any lesson whenever your plants — or your schedule — call for it.

05

Practical knowledge, not theory

Our instructors are home growers first. Every technique taught has been tested in a real Canadian home, and every recommendation is grounded in what actually works indoors.
