Service description

A gentle, activity-based course designed for families with children aged 6 to 14. Short, engaging video lessons guide kids through planting seeds, caring for easy-to-grow species, and understanding how plants breathe, drink, and grow. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to follow along — the whole family learns together.

  1. 01

    What the course covers

Twelve short video lessons — each between eight and twelve minutes — guide children through the essentials of indoor plant care: planting seeds, understanding how plants take in water and air, and keeping easy-to-grow species healthy through the seasons. The pace is calm and the language is clear, designed so a child can follow along independently or with a grown-up beside them.

Alongside the videos, printable activity sheets and plant journals give children something to do with their hands and a place to record what they notice. A simple propagation project — taking a cutting and watching it root — is included as a hands-on centrepiece that tends to become a favourite memory.

  2. 02

Who this course is designed for

The lessons are written for children aged 6 to 14, though younger children who are curious about plants will enjoy them with a parent or grandparent guiding the way. There is no assumed knowledge: the course starts from the very beginning and builds gently, so a child who has never touched a houseplant is exactly the right student.

Parents and grandparents are not just welcome — they are encouraged to follow along as full participants. Monstera Guru Academy was shaped by three generations of one family, and this course reflects that: it is genuinely designed to be a shared experience, not a screen to park a child in front of.

  3. 03

How the course works, step by step

After enrolment, every member of your household gets access to all twelve lessons, the activity sheets, and the family forum. The course is self-paced, so you move through it at whatever rhythm suits your family — one lesson on a rainy Saturday, two in a half-term week, or spread across a whole season.

Each lesson ends with a small task: potting a seed, sketching a leaf, or checking the soil moisture on a plant the child is already tending. The recommended beginner plant list points families toward easy-to-find species available at grocery stores and garden centres across Canada, so there is no need to hunt for anything unusual or expensive.

  4. 04

    What families receive with enrolment

One enrolment covers every member of your household — siblings, parents, grandparents — with no limit on how many people watch or participate. A gift enrolment option is available for families you want to introduce to the course, delivered as an e-certificate they can redeem in their own time.

Children who complete the course receive a completion certificate, which many families find is a meaningful moment of recognition. The family forum gives you a place to share photos of first sprouts, ask questions between lessons, and connect with other families who are working through the same projects at the same time.

  5. 05

What to have ready before you start

You do not need to buy anything before your first lesson. The course includes a recommended beginner plant list that points you toward species like pothos and spider plants, which are widely available and inexpensive. Bean seeds from a grocery store work perfectly for the planting activities.

A small pot, some potting mix, and a bright windowsill are enough to get started. The activity sheets are designed to print on standard paper at home. If you already have a plant or two in the house, even better — children can begin observing and journalling right away, before they have watched a single lesson.

  6. 06

Rooted in how families actually learn together

Monstera Guru Academy began with a grandmother passing on what she knew to the children around her — not in a classroom, but at home, with soil on the table and questions welcome at any point. That origin is woven into every part of this course: the unhurried pace, the hands-on projects, the invitation for adults to learn alongside children rather than supervise from a distance.

Many of the families who have taken this course return to other Monstera Guru programmes as the children grow and their collections deepen. The beginner plant a child tends at seven has a way of becoming the cutting they propagate at twelve, and the knowledge they carry into adulthood. That layered, continuing growth is exactly what this course is here to start.
